In LED lighting, what determines product life is often not the LED itself but the driver board. While an LED promises 50,000 hours, a poorly designed driver fails at a fifth of that.
Manufacturing quality in lighting electronics therefore determines a product's reputation in the market.
Thermal management. Luminaires operate inside sealed housings where LED and driver share the same volume. Board temperature directly determines the life of the electrolytic capacitors on it — every 10°C rise halves it. Component selection and layout are planned accordingly.
Capacitor life. Capacitor dry-out is the most common failure mode in driver boards. In long-life products, using high-temperature-rated capacitors raises cost but lowers warranty cost. This balance is assessed per project.
Vibration and humidity. In outdoor and industrial lighting, ingress protection requirements determine board coating and enclosure.
Mains protection. In street and outdoor lighting, lightning-induced surges are a real risk. Surge protection circuits are sized accordingly.
Dimming and control. In dimmable, sensor-equipped and smart-control luminaires, the driver board carries additional communication capability.
